If you're considering an ADHD assessment, one of the first questions you might run into is:

Should I see a psychologist or a psychiatrist? The answer depends on what you're hoping to get out of the assessment process.

The good news is that both psychologists and psychiatrists can play an important role in ADHD assessment and support. Understanding the differences can help you choose the pathway that feels best for you.

Who Can Assess ADHD?

In Australia, ADHD assessments can be completed by:

  • Psychologists

  • Psychiatrists

  • Paediatricians (for children and adolescents)

All three professionals have training in assessing ADHD, but their roles within the assessment and treatment process are a little different.

What Does a Psychologist Do?

Psychologists are trained to assess, diagnose, and understand how ADHD impacts a person's life. Many psychological assessments also use questionnaires, clinical interviews, and standardised assessment tools to build a detailed picture of how ADHD may be showing up for an individual.

Psychological assessments often provide a comprehensive understanding of strengths, challenges, and support needs, rather than focusing solely on whether diagnostic criteria are met.

Psychologists can diagnose ADHD, but they do not prescribe medication.

What Does a Psychiatrist Do?

Psychiatrists are medical doctors who specialise in mental health. Like psychologists, psychiatrists can assess and diagnose ADHD. The key difference is that psychiatrists can also prescribe medication if appropriate.

For many people, psychiatrists play an important role in discussing treatment options, including medication, and monitoring how medication is working over time.

If you are considering ADHD medication, your GP can refer you directly to a psychiatrist.

What About Paediatricians?

For children and adolescents, paediatricians are also able to assess, diagnose, and prescribe medication for ADHD. Some paediatricians may request a psychologist's assessment as part of the diagnostic process, particularly if they would like additional information about a child's functioning across different settings.

Which Option Is Right for Me, Psychologist or Psychiatrist?

There isn't one pathway that is right for everyone.

Some people choose to see a psychiatrist first because they are interested in exploring medication options.

Others choose a psychological assessment because they are looking for a detailed understanding of their experiences, strengths, support needs, and recommendations for school, work, or everyday life.

Some people access both services, using a psychologist for assessment and support, and a psychiatrist for medication management.

The best option depends on your goals, preferences, and the type of information or support you're looking for.
