The Assessment Process
Step 1: Booking an appointment
Our neuro-affirming ADHD assessments consist of 2-3 hours of interview time.
-
You can choose a mix between
-
one 2-hour sessions
-
two 1-hour sessions
-
Step 2: Interview
-
In your appointment, we will talk to you about your possible ADHD traits using the DIVA-5 (for adults) or the Young DIVA (for individuals under 18). We will discuss ADHD traits in both adulthood and childhood.
-
If you are under 25, we ask that you bring a parent, carer or an adult you knew as a child.
-
If you are over 25, you are welcome to bring a support person.
Step 3: Questionnaires
You will be asked to complete online questionnaires which help provide a comprehensive picture of your neurodivergence.
Step 4: Feedback
-
After your assessment is complete, you will have a 1 hour feedback session with your assessor. They will go through the assessment findings with you.
-
This is your opportunity to ask any questions you may have.
Psychologist vs Psychiatrist for ADHD assessment
ADHD assessments can be completed with a psychologist, psychiatrist, or paediatrician (for children and teens)
-
If you are considering ADHD medication, your GP can refer you directly to a psychiatrist or paediatrician, as they are medical doctors who can assess and prescribe medication.
-
Psychologists can assess and diagnoses ADHD but cannot prescribe medication. Some paediatricians may request a psychologist's assessment before confirming an ADHD diagnosis in children, but this is less common for adults seeing psychiatrists.
Do Psychiatrist accept psychologists reports?
While our reports are accepted as evidence by psychiatrists, they typically conduct their own assessment before prescribing medication. Each psychiatrist has their own assessment process, and while our reports may help streamline their evaluation, it does not guarantee a shorter assessment. A good first step is to speak with your GP about psychiatrists they refer to and their specific process.
Why choose an ADHD assessment with a psychologist?
Some people prefer an ADHD assessment with a psychologist, either before seeing a psychiatrist or instead of seeing one. Some reasons include -
-
No interest in medication - they want to understand themselves and their neurotype better
-
Comprehensive written documentation - helpful for requesting workplace of school accommodations (we also offer targeted workplace or school accomodation assessments)
-
A holistic and affirming approach - our reports are neuro-affirming and provide a detailed overview
ADHD Assessments
About our ADHD Assessments
Our assessments are provided by our neurodivergent and neuro-affirming team members. We have experience assessing 'internalised' or 'masked' ADHD profiles in people who don't fit the mainstream stereotypes.
We are also able to provide differential diagnoses between neurodivergence, other neurodevelopmental differences, complex trauma, and mental health conditions. We offer a trauma-informed service and understand that Autistic people are more likely to have experienced trauma than their neurotypical peers. We are often looking for neurodivergence AND trauma together rather than thinking it has to be one or the other.
