Intellectual Disability Assessments

We are here to move beyond outdated assumptions and create space for intellectual disability to be understood with care and respect. Our neuro-affirming team provides comprehensive intellectual disability assessments that recognise the many ways cognitive and adaptive differences can present, including differences in reasoning, problem solving, communication, and daily living skills that may be misunderstood or overlooked.

Our assessments are trauma informed and place strong emphasis on differential identification, considering whether difficulties with learning and adaptive functioning are best explained by an intellectual disability, or reflect a different profile, such as an existing Autism identification, a specific learning difference, or the impact of limited access to education growing up. This distinction is especially important for individuals who have not had the opportunity to be assessed earlier in life.

We also differentiate intellectual disability from other neurodevelopmental differences, communication differences, and the effects of complex trauma.

Our Assessment Process

Our neuro-affirming Intellectual Disability assessments consist of 2-3 hours of interview time.

Appointments can be scheduled in one- or two-hour blocks, depending on your preference and capacity. Our team will work with you to structure the sessions in a way that supports comfort, pacing, and a thorough assessment process.
In your appointment, we will talk about your experiences using structured clinical interview guidelines informed by the WAIS-5 and Vineland-3 or ABAS-2, review the DSM-5-TR criteria for Intellectual Disability.

If you are under 25, we ask that you bring a parent, carer or an adult you knew as a child.

If you are over 25, you are welcome to bring a support person.
Part of the WAIS-5 needs to be completed in hard copy. We will post this section to you to complete in while in your interview with your clinican, and ask that you post it back to us so your clinician can score and interpret the results.
Once the assessment process is complete, you will attend a 1-hour feedback session with your assessor.

During this session, we will:

Discuss the assessment findings

Explain how they relate to diagnostic criteria (if applicable)

Provide recommendations for supports, strategies, or next steps

This is also your opportunity to ask questions and reflect on the information in a supportive and collaborative space.

Fees & Frequently Asked Questions

Intellectual Disability assessment fees range from $1500 to $2000, depending on your clinicians experience.

Senior clinicians: $2000

Other clinicians: $1500

Fees include interview time, questionnaires, and a comprehensive written report. All registered and provisional psychologists are supervised by our senior clinicians.

*Fees are based on a standard assessment with up to 2 hours of interview time. If additional time is required due to complexity, we will contact you beforehand with an updated quote.
You are welcome to pay privately for your assessment.

Medicare may provide rebates for Intellectual Disability assessments for people under 25 years old, when you have a referral from a paediatrician or psychiatrist.

You may be able to access:

Private health fund rebates (depending on your provider and level of cover). If you plan to claim through private health, please let us know as you will need to see a registered psychologist.

NDIS funding. If you are plan-managed, please check with your Support Coordinator or Plan Manager to confirm whether your assessment can be covered.
