Hello, I'm Zoe, a Psychologist from Victoria and it's my mission in life to help neurodivergent people find balance in their lives to support their health and wellbeing.

What is Occupational Therapy?

Or should I say - what isn’t occupational therapy - that might be easier!

If you don’t know what OT can offer you, It’s okay, I only found out exactly what an OT did after my first few lectures at uni. It turns out that ‘occupations’ are everything we do in life - how we 'occupy' our time. Therapy with me can help you achieve your goals in whatever occupation is your focus. Occupational Therapists think in these 3 main areas:

1. Self-care occupations

Which include everyday activities such as managing your healthcare, finances, sleeping, cooking, washing and eating to name a few.

2. Leisure occupations​

These are the fun occupations, think socialising, participating in community groups, community sports, arts groups and hobbies.

3. Productivity

These are the occupations that often give you meaning and purpose, mine is working as an occupational therapist – yours might be work, studying or volunteering in your community. What can get in the way of 'productivity' is difficulties with executive functions - such as trouble planning, prioritising, initiating tasks or remembering information. For people with chronic health or pain conditions, I can support you with personalised energy conservation techniques so you have the energy to continue doing what you need and want to do each day.

And for teenagers, well, 'occupations' for a teenager are: learning at school, playing and spending time with friends, and developing skills for future self-care and independence.

How will I support you?

How do I support you with all of these ‘occupations’? Well, two areas I enjoy working in that I think neurodivergent people often benefit from are:

Assistive Technology (AT) supports.

Executive functioning is a high-level skill that can be supported well through technology. I use technology to reduce my daily cognitive load. Let’s work together to find personalised ways to reduce your daily cognitive load using technology. Think home automation and actually using your devices for the features they boast! I like to do this by researching technology and apps to support neurodivergent brains. There is so much out there!

Sensory Supports

As an OT all things ‘sensory’ is my bread and butter - I can assess your sensory profile and help you find real-world practical supports across your environments, whether it’s work, home, or school to help your performance and participation. I can help educate your workplace or school about how to modify the environment to accommodate your profile whilst building your or your teenager's own skills in understanding sensory preferences and ways to regulate and recharge day-to-day.

My eye sparkles and SpIns (special interests) include: 

  • I was a total scout nerd, earned my queen scout award, went to jamborees, and loved every moment of adventuring in nature.

  • Now, I fulfil my need for time in the great outdoors by going on camping trips with friends who I met through the scouting community. I recently drove the #iconic Gibb River Road trip, we even bought Akubra’s for the event.

  • I’m a water baby, I love diving under ocean waves and recently have taken up lap swimming, I find it calming.

  • Dancing makes me happy, music festivals are a favourite pastime and researching new artists!

  • I’m a dog parent to a young staffy girl, Stormi! I enjoy going to dog training and practicing new/fun skills with her!

Fees

  • The standard consultation fee for a 50-minute appointment with Emma is $200. This applies to all clients, including privately paying clients, clients using Medicare or private health insurance and NDIS clients who are self-managed.

  • Fees for NDIS plan-managed clients are as per the NDIS price guide for Occupational Therapists.

  • You may use private health fund insurance for appointments with Emma.

  • If you have a valid referral, Medicare rebates using a Chronic Disease Management Plan are available for appointments with Emma.

  • Emma is not able to provide Medicare rebates under a Mental Health Care Plan.

Appointments

  • Emma works with us on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

  • Emma's wait list is estimated to be around 4 to 6 months. This is only a rough estimate; our waitlists can be fluid, and sometimes there is movement, which means we might be able to offer you an earlier appointment that pops up.

  • While you are waiting, we encourage you to ask us to put you on Emma's 'cancellation list' so we can contact you if there are any cancelled appointments we need to fill. This can help us get you into the earliest possible appointment.

What happens now?

  • Please contact the Very Helpful Chats admin team to join Emma's wait list by filling in the by filling in the Very Helpful Chats contact form or emailing us at admin@veryhelpfulchats.com.au
     

  • After you get in touch, our dedicated admin team will send you our brief 'waitlist and matching intake form'. This form is designed to gather basic information about your needs to make sure we can offer you the service you need. This form also helps us match you with a clinician who has the skills and experience to meet your needs.
     

  • Once we are able to offer you an appointment, we will send you a second intake form. This form goes into greater detail and aims to gather more specific information about your history and current situation to enable your allocated clinician to better prepare for your appointment.
     

  • As part of the second intake form, we also request your credit card, debit card, or Paypal details. Rest assured that we take card security seriously, and your details are stored securely on our client management system, Halaxy. This security measure helps us prevent theft and fraud. No one at Very Helpful Chats will have access to your card details.
